Located in the cultural park of La Villette, the new Philharmonie de Paris (PdP) brings a long-awaited large concert hall to Paris, and aims to shift the musical center of gravity toward the northeastern border of Paris. The heart of PdP building is its 2,400-seat Grande Salle. It was designed primarily for orchestral acoustic programs, but also allows for modular arrangements of stage and audience, including satellite platforms for musicians or end-stage configuration with standing audience. The primary focus of the design was to create a rich and full, yet intimate acoustical experience for musicians and audience alike. The design of the hall adopted a surround-type layout, with audience seating not only in front of the orchestra but also on the sides and behind, creating a great sense of proximity and communion in the hall.
The principal resident ensemble in the new hall is Orchestre de Paris. Also residing in the complex will be the Ensemble Intercontemporain, les Arts Florissants, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Orchestre National d’Ile de France.
Nagata Acoustics served as personal acoustical advisor to Mr. Nouvel and his teams throughout the project, from the beginning of the design in 2007 to the inauguration of the new hall in January 2015, including the acoustical testing of a 1:10 physical model.
