Located north of the central business district, the Baoshan district of Shanghai sits at the mouth of the Yangtze. As part of coastal redevelopment, a 1,037-seat concert hall was built in addition to a museum, hotel, observation tower, and office and retail space. The concert hall is designed to provide cultural facilities for anticipated growth in orchestral music throughout the area.
The interior of the hall reflects the exterior motif of tessellating triangles at several scales. The walls and ceiling are constructed from precast glass-fiber reinforced gypsum with a crystalline triangle relief pattern. Acoustically transparent balcony fronts also feature the triangle motif but with cut outs for sound energy to pass through.
There is no audience surrounding the stage, however several layers of wooden pickets made to mimic organ pipes provide a focal point behind the stage.
While the hall was inaugurated by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in September 2024, the Shanghai Philharmonic will become the resident orchestra.
